Value different experiences, manage conflict positively

Different experience levels, different areas of expertise and different cultural backgrounds, provide valuable sources of inspiration and knowledge. It is also important to understand why conflict occurs and how it can be handled.

Difference of perspective

Managing conflict

Conflict is a key element in high performing teams and can be beneficial when conducted in  healthy and productive way. Conflict should be seen as an opportunity for all to engage and share their ideas, in order to find the best solution for the team.

When engaging in any form of conflict, consider:

  • How does it make you feel?
  • How do you think it makes others feel?

With this in mind, what would be the best way to approach this?

Top tips for team meetings

  • Everyone to speak once before someone speaks twice
  • Give each team member the opportunity to be heard - ask each person individually
  • If discussing difficult topics - contract at start of session (for example,. no judgement, no bad ideas, challenge idea not person, nothing to be taken outside this meeting)
